Shopping Guide for Women's Wedding Bands

For most women, shopping for a wedding band is a straightforward process compared to shopping for an engagement ring, but there are still some key variables to consider. First, consider the metal, which will often match the engagement ring. Then, choose the style that resonates with you, a simple band or a band with stones, such as eternity or half-eternity styles. Next, consider the width and depth of the band and, finally, the finish.

Choosing the metal is often simple, as most women select the same metal for the band as the engagement ring. However, there are no rules; some prefer a mix of metals, such as a yellow gold band with a white gold ring.

Next, decide on the style. Do you want an unadorned band or a band with stones? If you opt for stones, consider the different setting styles. In a shared prong setting, each stone shares two prongs with the diamond set beside it. In a 4-prong setting, each stone is held by its own four prongs. A channel setting is another option where the stones are set in a row inside a channel cut into the band. In a bezel setting, each stone is surrounded by a ring of metal, and finally, there is a pavé-setting where tiny diamonds are held by small prongs, which has an overall sparkly effect. It's important to note that full-eternity and channel-set styles can often not be resized.

If you know you are tough on jewelry, an unadorned band, bezel-setting, or 4-prong setting are the most secure styles. Pavé is the most fragile style, and regardless of the setting, it's advisable to have your prongs checked by a jeweler once a year to ensure they are secure. Please do not wear your rings while lifting weights or heavy objects; these activities can bend the setting.

Next, consider the ideal width and depth of the band paired with your engagement ring. You may want a similar width and depth as the engagement ring shank so it doesn't disappear beneath or overtake it. The best way to determine the band's look with your engagement ring is to try them on in person or work with a jeweler to meet your exact specifications.

Finally, select the finish which is most visible on an unadorned band or a half-eternity setting. (The half-eternity style will likely spin on your finger with day-to-day activity, and the stones won't always remain facing front.) Most people match the finish to the engagement ring, so this is usually a quick decision, but there are options from high-polish to a matte or a brushed finish to add the finishing touch.
